Campus-The medical and health world is now shocked by the spread of monkeypox outbreaks in several countries. Diseases that originate from viral infections are caused by rare viruses from animals, with general symptoms that are almost similar to smallpox. The World Health Organization (WHO) states: global health emergency against the monkeypox epidemic or monkeypox on July 23, 2022.

“The symptoms of human monkeypox are similar to the symptoms of chickenpox in general, but tend to be milder. The difference is, in monkey pox, enlarged lymph nodes are obtained (lymphadenopathy)“explained a skin disease expert from Brawijaya University (UB), Dr Dhelya Widasmara as quoted from the ub.ac.id page.

Dhelya, who is familiarly called Lala, explained that the signs and symptoms that appear depend on the phase of the disease. The first is the prodromal phase (which shows symptoms), which according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, early symptoms in the phase prodromal among others: the patient will experience a fever accompanied by headaches that sometimes feel great, muscle aches, backaches. Further swelling of the lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) which is felt in the neck, armpits, or in the groin area, body heat and cold even fatigue and weakness.

Meanwhile, the eruption phase occurs 1-3 days (sometimes longer) after the phase prodromal. In the eruption phase, rashes or lesions appear on the skin. Usually, these rashes or lesions start on the face, then spread to other parts of the body gradually, he explained.

Then, a rash or lesions on the skin will develop starting from red spots like smallpox (maculopapular), blisters that contain clear fluid or pus, then harden or scab until they fall off. Symptoms of monkeypox will last for 2-4 weeks until the period of the lesion / skin rash disappears.

“Virus transmission” monkeypox occurs when a person comes into contact with animals, humans, or materials that are infected or contaminated with the virus. Then the virus enters the body through microlesion on the skin or very small wounds (although not visible), the respiratory tract, or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth),” explained Lala, who is also a dermatologist who focuses on this tropical infection.

While transmission from animals to humans can occur through bites or scratches, direct contact with body fluids or material from the lesion (such as blood), or indirect contact, such as through contaminated bedding.

The transmission of monkeypox between humans, added the lecturer who is also an alumni of the UB Medical Faculty, is estimated to occur mainly through droplet (splash) breathing. splash droplet cannot survive long and fly far, so long face-to-face contact is required.

“Methods of human-to-human transmission include direct contact with body fluids or material from lesions, and indirect contact with lesion material, such as through contaminated clothing or linen,” he explained.

Furthermore, Dr. Lala said, monkeypox is a type of disease that can heal itself. To date, there is no specific treatment for viral infections monkeypox, so that symptomatic and supportive treatment can be given to relieve the complaints that arise.

Initial treatment should be done at home when signs and symptoms appear and there is a history of contact with the sufferer monkeypox.
