The best weather forecast and for many the start of a long weekend: Ascension Day – also known as Father’s Day – is a free day for most citizens in NRW. In times of the pandemic, it will run differently than usual, groups of men with handcarts have to postpone their tour due to the corona. But some other leisure activities are possible again. An overview with tips can be found here.

- Spend the night away: Hotels and holiday apartments are allowed to take tourists back after a week-long break under hygiene requirements. Campsites are also open – and can hardly save themselves from the onslaught. After weeks of standstill, the companies have prepared for a new start, it was said in the Eifel, in the Sauerland and on the Lower Rhine.
- Drive away: If you find the domestic regions too boring, you can already go to other federal states. For the most part, tourists can also be admitted there. The borders with the neighboring countries of the Netherlands and Belgium were never closed anyway. However, a few days before Ascension, the state government lifted the obligation to quarantine for 14 days after returning from abroad. For most other countries, a travel warning applies until mid-June.
- To eat out: Having lunch out or drinking a beer in your favorite pub has been going back to NRW for the past week – also on Father’s Day. Bars, clubs and discos remain closed, however, and no opening is in sight for the time being.
- Soak up the sun: The meteorologists promise sunny, warm weather. The temperatures on Thursday are over 25 degrees according to a forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD). Up to 29 degrees are expected on the Rhine. Whether on the balcony, in the park or on a short trip: there shouldn’t be much in the way of sunbathing on Father’s Day.
- Swim: Those who have been lacking in the water in recent weeks can use the holiday to catch up. Outdoor pools in NRW are allowed to reopen from May 20, i.e. just in time for the holiday. A limited number of guests, minimum distance – also in the pool and in the showers – as well as a mask requirement in closed rooms are required.
- Visits and meetings: Visitors or meetings with a second household – i.e. another family, a couple, a flat share or an individual outside of their own household are allowed. However, the contact restrictions still apply until the beginning of June: You cannot meet more people according to the guidelines. Tours with a handcart, alcohol and the whole clique are therefore excluded. The Heinsberg district administrator Stephan Pusch (CDU) appealed in a video message: “Dear fathers, Father’s Day cannot be celebrated as usual. But I think that is clear to everyone. But I hope that we will be right again next year. ”
