What is AirTag? Learn how Apple’s digital tracker works | Wearables

A Apple started to integrate the digital tracker market with the AirTag announcement in April. After months of expectation, the device arrives to compete in a sector that already has the presence of Samsung like SmartTag. The product arrives for R $ 369, an initial value that rivals the R $ 199 of the South Korean. The package with four devices, in turn, costs R $ 1,249.

Although it has already been approved by the Anatel, it is unclear when the tracker will actually be available for purchase. The tracker integrates with the Find My platform and the Search application, already present on iPhones and other devices, with the goal of locating devices that have been lost.

The Apple AirTag proposes to find lost objects. In the promotional images, the manufacturer emphasizes its use in suitcases, backpacks and key chains. It has three types of connection, the Bluetooth, O UWB it’s the NFC. Each of them performs specific functions, such as precise search, proximity location and Lost Mode, a tool already used by other Apple devices.

The structure of the AirTag is round, 31.9 mm in diameter, 8.0 mm thick and 11 grams. The finish is made of stainless steel, while the keychain component uses polyurethane or leather. This last part has several color options, including blue, orange, yellow and white, brown and red, the last two being only available for finishing in leather. In Brazil, the keyring is sold separately for the suggested price of R $ 439.

The AirTag has a part that can be opened when the battery needs to be changed. The device is powered by a CR2032 standard coin battery that was designed to last more than a year, according to Apple. Still in this sense, the iPhone can notify the user when it is time to replace the component.

It is worth saying that the product has water and dust resistance IP67, which allows contact with water at a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes without damage to the device.

In terms of compatibility, it must be said that the AirTag depends on iOS 14.5 or higher to connect to iPhones and the iPod Touch. A system is also required from the iPadOS 14.5 for the case of iPads. This prerequisite can be linked to the functions performed by the tracker, such as augmented reality technology that helps in the precise location of the lost object.

Apple already works with some ways to find the brand’s own devices offline. This happens through the Find My system, or Search, which through the connection with nearby devices, is able to locate a lost iPhone, for example. This logic is repeated in AirTag, which uses the same system and still uses Bluetooth. Once the item attached to the tracker has been lost in a nearby environment, the tracker sends an alert to the cell phone, which warns of the proximity and makes a sound.

Another way to find the object attached to the tracker is by the UWB chip. Cell phones from iPhone 11 already have the technology that enables the so-called Precise Search, which gives all the specific coordinates and exact distance to reach the lost item.

NFC connectivity also helps with the tracking process. She operates in Lost Mode and talks to nearby devices. When it finds an Apple device, the tag owner receives a notification. The person near the lost object receives a message on how to contact the owner of the item attached to the AirTag.

An issue that accompanies adherence to trackers is the concern with data privacy. In that regard, Apple says it prevents unwanted crawls. There are several mechanisms that seek to contemplate different situations. The first one is the alert that the iPhone sends when an unknown AirTag starts accompanying the person, followed by a beep that is emitted by the device after a time away from the owner’s cell phone. The appeal is welcome for situations involving jealous or suspicious spouses.

Information such as the location of the AirTag and other data can only be accessed by the owner himself. In the case of devices that send alerts about the location of the tracker, they remain anonymous and the information transmitted is encrypted. Apple says that not even itself has access to that information.
