In a study conducted in partnership with the Maastricht Cardiovascular Research Institute between March 12 and April 11, scientists observed two groups of people. One was 184 patients hospitalized for a severe form of Covid-19 in Holland, and the other was healthy.
Severe forms of Covid-19 cause blood to clot and break down the elastic fibers in the lungs, the scientists found. However, vitamin K is a key element in the production of proteins that regulate coagulation, as well as the protection of the fibers of the lungs that are making attack with coronavirus.
“We found that people who died from Covid-19 and were in intensive care had lower vitamin K levels compared to healthy people. We believe there is a connection between vitamin K and how the disease progresses, ”said Dr. Rob Janssen.
