What are the new trends in aesthetic medicine?

Is not the same aesthetic medicine What surgery. The medicine is not interventionist or features are changed, just try to improve them, surgery is resorted to operations.

The study reveals that the first trend that drives the aesthetic medicine market is the search for a natural, discreet and reversible beauty, motivated by preventive health care.

Secondly, the research highlights the entry of a much younger ´target´, whose age drops to 26, influenced by social networks.

And finally, it highlights a timid but steady growth of male clients as users of aesthetic medicine.

The first flirts with aesthetic medicine begin in adolescence motivated by a desire for improvement and not for change.

“Above all, we are demanded of acne treatments, for overweight, and medical photodepilation,” explains the president of the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME), Petra Vega, to EFEsalud

One of the reasons for the decrease in the average age of onset is due to parents, Vega says: “Before they were less aware of these problems, when, for example, children suffered from acne they used to blame it on things of age, now they they worry that there are no sequels. ”

Currently, 35.9 percent of the Spanish population uses the services of Aesthetic Medicine, which represents a growth of 5.4 percentage points in the last two years, according to the report.

What are the main treatments in aesthetic medicine?

56.7% of users choose facial treatments exclusively, while 20 percent of the population ensures that they perform facial and body treatments interchangeably.

Dermal fillers and botulinum toxin are the most demanded treatments. The main concern of young people is to combat cellulite and reduce body fat while the elderly opt for hyperpigmentation, blemishes and photorejuvenation treatments.

“Starting at age 20 there is a desire to increase cheekbones and lips,” says Dr. Vega

The president of SEME recalls that “for any interventionist treatment the person must be over 18 years of age, as long as it is indicated.”

To these needs is added the new American trend “Baby Botox” which consists of infiltrating lower doses of botulinum toxin to reduce or prevent certain pathologies before they appear.

It is important to highlight that “baby botox does not mean that botox is put in younger people, but that a higher solution is made so that its effect is lighter,” says the specialist.

It is essential, he warns, that “any treatment that is done at young ages is reversible because our skin and features change over time. When putting a permanent product, this is as it is and, although our skin ages, in the end there is a dysfunction that causes it to be unsightly ”.

How are consumers of aesthetic medicine?

According to the data extracted from this study five out of ten women Y two out of ten men They are users of aesthetic treatments.

61.8 percent come to the center for recommendations from friends and family while young people mainly use the Internet for information.

If we talk about facial, body and hair treatments, the consumer profile is around 28-32 years and 35-39 years for anti-aging prevention treatments.

The appearance of selfies, the diffusion that aesthetic medicine has in social networks and the influence they have on young people has caused those under 26 years of age to enter the world of Aesthetic Medicine through hyaluronic acid fillers in lips and other preventive treatments with botulinum toxin.

Petra Vega denounces the intrusion in this sector: “It is a danger that people who are not doctors recommend operations because aesthetic medicine depends on many factors; you have to make a medical history, there are side effects, contraindications, etc. ”

“Non-medical influencers should say what can be done, but let each person consult the doctor what is convenient for them,” he concludes.

As for the direction of aesthetic medicine, it is promising, but there are two clearly marked slopes. It is necessary to differentiate between aging people and the younger sectors.

While the first seeks naturalness and alleviate the symptoms of aging without modifying the features, in the second social networks and selfies have generated a search for stereotyped models.

“Older people want them to be told when they see them, you’re very good but not what you’ve done. However, young people ask to be noticed, ”Vega points out.

Spain, destination for health tourism?

For years, Spain works to position itself as a reference country in health tourism.

This year he has managed to be on the podium, as the second country in Europe and fifth in the world in this type of tourism.

For the president of the SEME “it is the work of the administrations to highlight the high quality of our medicine and training, one of the main industries is tourism, so combining the two things is necessary. It is a political task. ”

During 2018, 140,000 patient-tourists were received and in 2020 this figure is expected to reach 200,000 foreigners.

It is estimated that the annual turnover of the sector has reached € 2,884,815,482.
