West Virginia: Record Musky amazes anglers

In addition to the scenic Appalachian Mountains and the national anthem “Country Roads”, the US state of West Virginia is primarily known for its outstanding fishing waters. Burnsville Lake in Braxton County near the Monongahela National Forest is particularly popular with US anglers. And rightly so, as a current catch report shows. Chase Gibson, a local fishing guide, was able to drill and land a major muscle lung (also called a musky).

Interesting too

The North American cousin of the pike weighs an impressive 18 kilograms and measures just under 137 centimeters. For comparison: the largest pike ever caught in Europe was almost 140 centimeters in size. Gibson was reportedly out and about at Burnsville Lake near Clarksburg and Charleston when the record-breaking Musky bit.

Musky was tagged and released back into the wild

Gibson was visibly delighted with his record catch. “I was fishing in a wooded bay with a lot of crappies hanging from the wood. I caught it with a Musky Innovations Dyin ‘Dawg. She was barely hooked, with three of a kind in the corner of her mouth, ”he told the local media.

Aaron Yeager, a biologist with the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, immediately drove to the fishing site to have the fish measured. To qualify for the record, he had to officially certify the fish’s weight and dimensions. After confirming the animal’s details, Yeager helped tag the fish and then release it back into the water.

A new state record soon?

Gibson nevertheless hopes that something that is not always a matter of course for anglers. He wishes another angler could outsmart his record musky again in a few months. Maybe even with more weight. “Imagine how cool it would be if another angler caught this fish in the fall and set a new state record,” he said. Yeager reportedly worked with the West Virginia Fisheries Department to develop fish habitats in the area where he caught the capital musky.
