West Nile: Six new deaths have been recorded in the past week | Romania

Six new deaths from West Nile virus infection, in patients who also suffered from other ailments.

Six new deaths from West Nile virus infection have been recorded in the past week, in patients who also suffered from other ailments.

The number of deaths this season has reached 36, according to figures released today by the National Institute of Public Health.

In total, 256 cases of meningitis or meningoencephalitis caused by this virus have been recorded since spring.

Specialists estimate that – as the weather cools – the number of diseases will decrease, as West Nile is transmitted through the bites of various species of mosquitoes.

However, health authorities still recommend measures to avoid contagion: mosquito repellent products, appropriate clothing and mosquito nets, as there is no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment.
