West Ham’s failed swap deal in January played a major role in Villas-Boas’ resignation

According to The Sun, Andre Villas-Boas left his post as Marseille boss in part because a swap deal for Manuel Lanzini fell through.

Villas-Boas was desperate to sign Lanzini from West Ham and tried to engineer a trade deal involving Morgan Sanson.

Sanson joined Aston Villa in his place, so Villas-Boas returned with a late loan approach to Lanzini in hopes of replacing Sanson.

However, Marseille failed to sign Lanzini, instead bringing in Olivier Ntcham from Celtic, a player Villas-Boas made clear he did not want.

Villas-Boas then offered his resignation as a result, which was accepted as Marseille now looks towards a new era.

The 27-year-old Lanzini has started only two Premier League games this season with nine additional appearances as a substitute, and the arrival of Jesse Lingard pushed him down the pecking order.

The Argentine was once so important under Slaven Bilic and then in David Moyes’ first stint at the club, but injuries and competition for places have taken their toll.

It’s almost a surprise that West Ham didn’t let Lanzini leave for Marseille before the deadline, and Villas-Boas was clearly not happy with the decision.
