West Flemish corona patient (35): “Waited two days longer and the future looked completely different”

Facebook / Matthias Van Oost

A 35-year-old man from Loppem was the first corona patient treated in a hospital in Bruges. He gave up seriously, but was now allowed to leave the hospital. “I have to avoid all contact for the next three weeks,” he writes on Facebook.

Matthias Van Oost felt bad at the beginning of March. He had a low fever, muscle aches and dry cough. He went to the doctor who diagnosed a viral infection. The 35-year-old man was told that he just had to breastfeed.

Physically at

In the days that followed, his condition worsened. “After a week of suffering without eating anything, immense muscle pain, headache, average fever of 38.5 degrees, but especially dry coughing fits that lasted for an hour, causing me to gasp, I felt physically. At home they could no longer see it and they rushed me. There they took a picture of my lungs and a “corona test” later I was allowed to leave urgently with the diagnosis: “You will have to put up with Dafalgan”, it sounds.

Breathing problems and dehydration

On Thursday March 12, Matthias received the verdict: he had tested positive for Covid-19. He had to go to hospital immediately, making him the very first corona patient in the hospital in Bruges. “No one had yet been admitted with the coronavirus in AZ Sint-Jan (Bruges), so there was advance consultation on how they would approach this. It was decided to put me in intensive care for at least 24 hours because of my weakened condition, breathing problems, signs of dehydration, 39 degrees fever and exhaustion. Fair? I didn’t have to wait an extra two days before the future looked completely different, ”he writes.

Avoid all contact

For five days he was quarantined in a special room for lung patients. He hung on various baxters and received antibiotics and extra oxygen. His condition improved and he was allowed to leave the hospital, although he should not be in contact with anyone. “At last I could see my family again, but unfortunately I can’t give a hug. I have to avoid all contact with everyone for the next three weeks because I have not yet recovered and it is not scientifically clear how long the virus will remain in my body. We are now three weeks and five kilos less, but I finally feel much better again ”, it sounds.

No jokes

Matthias thanks the hospital staff and calls for the coronavirus to be taken very seriously. “I was the first to joke about the coronavirus, but please leave that out. Stay in your room ”, he concludes.
