“Welcome to the future.” Vacuum cleaners did not work in the USA due to the failure of Amazon’s servers

Due to Wednesday’s outage of some of Amazon’s Internet servers, a number of appliances and other devices connected to the Internet have ceased to function in the United States. According to the BBC, some fans of so-called smart households could not do basic housework for several hours.

“I… can’t luxuriate… because (the server for the area) USA-East-1 fell,” wrote one of the owners of a robotic vacuum cleaner in the United States on Twitter. “Welcome to the future,” another social network user replied.

The outage affected the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud service, which, for example, stores information and commands from its devices, iRobot, which manufactures the popular “smart” Roomba vacuum cleaners. Although they can work without the Internet, if the user wants them to vacuum at a given time, or, for example, do not move away from the selected room, they must have a connection.

According to the BBC, smart bells called Ring, which are made by Amazon itself, have also stopped working temporarily. These allow users to install cameras in front of doors and other places around the house, the recording of which can be observed on a mobile phone.

The outage also affected the services of Adobe software company or the pages of The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos. However, AWS soon announced that it had succeeded in eliminating the problems and that all services were working again.
