No UFOs, but satellites. For weeks now, people around the world have been watching Elon Musk’s Starlink fleet in the night sky. A website shows when the satellites are flying by you.

As if lined up on a slipped string of pearls, they move across the starry night sky – the light spots flying past can also be seen again and again over Germany. It has long been clear that these are not UFOs, but satellites from Elon Musk’s SpaceX project Starlink. The Website findstarlink.com now brings clarity to the question of when and where the Starlink satellites will be seen.

Website shows position of Starlink satellites

You can use the live map to track where the various satellite columns are located approximately. If you want to know when you can even watch the satellites in the evening or night sky, you can enter the country and city in which you are currently using the “Find Starlink” item. Then it is clearly shown when the Starlink fleet can be seen at your own location.

It also shows how long you will probably see something and where the satellites fly from. The data with good and less good visibility is also divided. You should be able to see a lot of the satellites over the next few days, for example over Hanover between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. However, the whole thing only takes a few minutes.

Launch of the satellite internet in summer 2020

There are currently 360 satellites in the Starlink fleet in orbit, with another 60 to be added in the next few days, like that Frankfurter Rundschau reports. SpaceX plans to have 500 satellites in orbit by summer. Then Elon Musk could launch its global satellite internet offering. A total of between 12,000 and 42,000 satellites are to be launched – the more satellites, the higher the bandwidth of the Internet offer.

In addition to the joy of the possible broadband Internet access in rural and remote areas, there is already criticism of the project. Because the work of astronomers is disturbed by the bright satellites. SpaceX should therefore already be working on a dark satellite that will be less visible from the earth due to a special coating. However, SpaceX has not yet released any test results.
