Weather warning: Strong north-westerly storm

From au

Situation

In a very dynamic west to southwest circulation, a trough is rapidly deepening over the nearby Atlantic on Wednesday. It reaches Cornwall in the evening before crossing into southern England the following night. South of the depression, a strong gale force wind hit Brittany and the English Channel between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. We’ll talk about a storm in the northwest lands.

Here are the main characteristics of this strong storm:

– violent gusts from 100 to 120 km/h, locally 130 km/h on the exposed coasts and on the headlands of Brittany and the Channel.
– gusts of 80 to 100 km/h in Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Normandy and Hauts-de-France
– very rough to rough seas on the Brittany and Cotentin coasts but with low tidal coefficients, sea flooding should remain limited.

Observation

At 9am, the depression is over the nearby Atlantic, 500km off the tip of Brittany. The wind blows quite strongly on the Breton point with 78 km/h at the Pointe du Raz. Elsewhere it is 74 km/h at Carteret (50), 71 km/h at the tip of Chemouin (44).

Evolution

This afternoon, the wind gradually strengthens in Brittany. At the end of the afternoon, wind gusts reach 80-100 km/h on the exposed coasts of Finistère and Morbihan with locally 110 km/h on the islands.

This evening, the wind continues to strengthen in Brittany with violent gusts reaching 100-120 km/h at the tip of Finistère and the Morbihan coast, locally 125-130 km/h on the islands and exposed headlands. The wind also intensifies markedly from the northern coasts of Brittany to the Normandy coast with gusts of 90 to 100 km/h and between 110 and 120 km/h on the most exposed coasts. The risk of reaching 130 km/h is not excluded from the Channel Islands to Cap de la Hague.

In the night between Wednesday and Thursday, the wind will blow in violent gusts from the Cotentin to the Opal Coast passing through the Alabaster Coast with gusts from 90 to 100 km/h, locally from 110 to 120 km/h. The wind will lose intensity in Brittany with gusts between 70 and 90 km/h on the coasts.
The trough will move away across the North Sea on Thursday morning and the wind will gradually lose strength in the English Channel. The special release can be revoked at 9:00.
