Weather, Snow | Now the heat is leaving Norway – there may be sleet and snow in the high mountains

A so-called blocking high pressure in the British Isles seems to lock Norway in cool summer weather in the coming weeks.

– Maybe it will only be the East Fjords that get temperatures around 20 degrees, maybe just above, says on-duty meteorologist Per Egil Haga at the Meteorological Institute to Nettavisen on Tuesday afternoon.

May get sleet and snow

The meteorologist will not even rule out sleet and snow in higher-lying areas. It may come as early as Wednesday.

– If you walk, for example, in Jotunheimen and go up to over 1000-1400 meters, then you should not rule out that there may be some white precipitation. It’s good to think about when packing your backpack. Bring warm clothes, the meteorologist advises.

Unstable air masses

On Tuesday it is in the north of the country we find the highest temperature, over 20 degrees in many places and up to 25 degrees. But there are the unstable air masses with great danger of lightning and thunder.

– In places in Troms it can also be heavy rain showers, says the meteorologist about the outlook on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

On Wednesday, the change, which is expected to continue for some time, will begin.

– Then we go into a cool weather type. This applies to northern Norway, and it does not look like it will be very hot anywhere in the country, neither this week nor next. It seems to establish a high pressure southwest of the British Isles, and north of this we get low pressure from the Atlantic Ocean both south and north of the country. This southwestern type of weather means moderate temperatures, says Haga.

The meteorologist can therefore not promise hot air anywhere, other than at best around 20 degrees Østafjells.

– The period we are entering will be characterized by a good deal of precipitation, especially in the western areas, in Trøndelag and in large parts of northern Norway, but perhaps not so much in the east, he says.

– We expect many days of precipitation, perhaps also more precipitation than normal for the period, and in the mountains there may be sleet and snow in the height.

Sun and drought in southern Europe

– What is the situation on the other side of this blocking high pressure near the British Isles?

– South of the British Isles and further on the continent, we expect quite high temperatures, so the drought and heat that they have experienced in many places there, it continues, says Haga.

The warmest Tuesday is along the Adriatic Sea and in southern Italy. There, some regions have issued a danger warning at the red level due to the high temperatures. On Tuesday at 13 it was measured 37 degrees in Tirana, 38 degrees in Comiso and Cagliari, 35 degrees in Rome, 32 degrees in Dubrovnik and 30 degrees in Cannes.
