Hurricane Henri threatens part of northeastern United States
New England could be affected by Hurricane Henri this weekend, a first for 30 years. New York is also on high alert.
Faced with the threat, several governors called on the population to be cautious.

Storm Henri transformed into a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday and is heading towards the northeastern United States, the U.S. Hurricane Monitoring Center (NHC) said. With winds now up to 120 km / h, Henri is due to reach the American coast on Sunday at Long Island, near New York, or southern New England, a little further north, according to the NHC, which s ‘however expects “to weaken before his arrival”. 7 to 15 cm of precipitation is expected across the region, and up to 25 cm in places, the NHC warned.
Part of the northeastern United States, including New York City, has been placed on alert for the approach of Tropical Storm Henri, which may become the first hurricane in 30 years to hit the New England coast. Henri comes with the risk of flooding and strong winds that could cause serious damage, the US weather services announced on Friday.
“Henry is expected to turn into a hurricane this evening (Friday) or Saturday and have the force of a hurricane or be very close to it when it makes landfall on Long Island or in southern New England on Sunday,” said in a bulletin Friday at 5:00 p.m. National Hurricane Monitoring Center (NHC). But the weather services warned of potential impacts as early as Saturday.
“The last hurricane to make landfall in New England dates back to Bob in 1991,” said a spokesperson for the US agency for the study of the ocean and the atmosphere. This hurricane had killed at least 17 people across the East Coast.
A first in 10 years for New York
Faced with the threat, several governors called on the population to be cautious. In Massachusetts, the city of Boston, Governor Charlie Baker called on “everyone to avoid unnecessary travel,” especially in coastal areas. In this state, where all beaches and parks will be closed between Saturday and Monday, the storm could cause power cuts for 100,000 to 300,000 residents, say the governor’s services.
The hurricane warning is also valid in parts of Long Island, New York, and in the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island, the National Weather Service said on Twitter on Friday, putting warns against the risks of “dangerous waves and currents”.
Part of the coast located in New York is affected by the alert for this tropical storm. “This is the first time in nearly 10 years that a hurricane watch has been issued for parts of our region,” New York City weather services said, adding that the last time it was was Hurricane Irene at the end of August 2011.
