Weather forecast, last quick showers: then temperatures rising and a sunny Sunday

On Wednesday 20 March at 4.06am we will officially enter the new season: a Spring which is currently expected to be warmer than normal and with some more rain. Obviously these are seasonal forecasts to be monitored and confirmed.

An anomalous winter

The Winter of 2023-2024 was ‘anomalous’. After months of an ‘insignificant’ season from a climatological point of view, from 20 February snow arrived in the Alps as it hadn’t happened for decades, in tons. There have been no record snowfalls associated with sudden icy outbreaks, indeed global warming has probably favored these exceptional phenomena by providing a greater vapor content in the atmosphere; a trend that scientists confirm year after year: warmer temperatures, greater evaporation and more intense precipitation. So even the record snowfalls of the last month could therefore be associated with ongoing Climate Change.

Sunny and mild weekend

In the meantime, however, after 3 weekends marred by bad weather, this weekend will be mostly sunny and mild, except for quick showers towards the centre-south.

Over the next few hours, isolated showers are expected, especially in Friuli Venezia Giulia and between Tuscany, Romagna and Marche; subsequently some sudden showers, but always of a local nature, will hit the rest of the central regions, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia in a patchy pattern. Only from the evening will the umbrellas open also in Calabria while sunny spells will take hold more and more in the centre-north.

Last Sunday of winter

A fast unstable passage, therefore, connected to low pressure centered on Denmark, very far away. The effects of this depression will only be felt on Saturday, while the last Sunday of Winter will be beautiful!

In detail, Sunday 17 March will see the sun almost everywhere: in the south we will have some residual phenomena, until lunchtime, over Salento, Calabria and locally in Sicily. For the rest, the North African anticyclone will bring back the sun with temperatures of up to 21°C in Agrigento and Benevento, 20 degrees also in Forlì, Caserta, Syracuse and Terni, 19°C in Bologna, Bolzano, Ferrara, Mantua and Modena to mention also cities of the Po Valley that will smell the scent of Spring and blooming flowers.

North African anticyclone

The new week will still be characterized by the presence of the North African Anticyclone with a prevalence of dry weather except for frequent cloudy passages: the skies will not always be blue, but the disturbances will be distant. A vortex will affect Poland on Monday, Ukraine on Tuesday and Romania on Wednesday. In Italy the first real disturbance is currently expected between Saturday 23rd and Palm Sunday, but obviously this is a long-term projection to be confirmed.

In detail

Saturday 16th. In the north: lots of clouds, showers in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In the center: sun and intermittent rain. In the south: rains/thunderstorms from the afternoon especially in Campania, Basilicata and Puglia.

Sunday 17. In the north: good weather, but fog in the morning on the plains. Middle: good weather. In the south: irregular clouds with residual rainfall on the Tyrrhenian Calabria.

Monday 18th. In the north: at times cloudy, rain in the Triveneto. In the center: unstable on the Adriatic. In the south: unstable over Puglia, many clouds elsewhere.

Trend: few variations; more intense disturbance expected from Saturday 23 March, to be confirmed.
