Weather forecast, here is the reversal that brings winter: plummeting temperatures and snow also in the Apennines

The experts on the website www.iLMeteo.it predict an extreme weather change: after having enjoyed a summer climate with peaks of 32-33°C even in the North, a winter-like parenthesis is about to return, a rather long parenthesis.

The sub-seasonal weather trend confirms, in fact, that the entire second half of April will be characterized by temperatures below the average for the period, in contrast to what has happened so far in this very hot 2024.

In addition to below-average temperature values, we will also have frequent rains until the end of the month: in fact, a turnaround is on the way with a Scandinavian outbreak and a drop in temperatures of up to 15°C in maximum values, locally we will also have 17 degrees less compared to the exceptional summer heat of the weekend.

Thunderstorms and hail in the North

In detail, the polar air will descend from Scandinavia suddenly, entering Italy in the next few hours: the first effects will be observable in the North-East with thunderstorms and possible hail, while in the South we will still have the remains of a North African depression with some scattered rain.

The real drop in temperatures will begin in the evening and will hit the whole country on Wednesday 17 April: the drop will be more marked in the eastern area, with maximum temperatures falling widely below 20°C. From 33° to 16°C, from summer to autumn, with winter-like characteristics.

Snow will return to the Apennines up to 1000 meters above sea level. In addition to the Alps, the mountains from Tuscany to Molise will return white.

In detail, as mentioned, strong thunderstorms are expected in the North-East and scattered rain in the South in the next few hours, elsewhere we will patiently await the Scandinavian irruption and the turnaround.

From Wednesday it gets worse everywhere

Wednesday 17 April will see a more widespread worsening in the Centre-South with mainly showers or thunderstorms: the North will remain temporarily protected by the Alpine chain, without significant rain but already with a significant drop in temperatures.

On Thursday 18th, a cyclone is expected to form on the Tyrrhenian Sea due to the influx of cold air: the precipitation will be snowy in the Apennines above 1000 metres. Showers and thunderstorms will affect the entire country in a patchy pattern, leaving only the Major Islands clear and drier. Even in the Alps the snow will be widespread above 900-1100 meters.

Friday will be a photocopy of Thursday with boots and skis ready on the Apennines and the Alps: snow will still make its appearance at exceptional altitudes for the period, up to 900-1000 metres. The only differences compared to Thursday are the lower rainfall in the North and in Tuscany and the greater rainfall in Sardinia and Sicily.

For the weekend it is still early, but in general temperatures will remain below average, some showers will still wet the North-East and the Centre-South in a winter-like context suitable for out-of-season skiing.
