Weather: Belgium on alert, snow expected

This Tuesday, the day will start with an overcast weather and still some rain over the south-east of the country. In the west and the center, it will be drier with temporarily the possibility of thinning. In the afternoon, the time will become more

variable and the risk of showers will increase in all regions. These can take on a winter character with sleet, or even slush in the Ardennes. A thunderclap will also be possible. The maximum will be between 4 degrees in Hautes-Fagnes and 9 degrees on the west and the center. The wind will be moderate to fairly strong from west-southwest. The gusts will no longer exceed 50 to 60 km / h.

Yellow alert from noon

The IRM placed the south of the country on yellow alert in slippery conditions from Tuesday noon until Thursday midnight. By midday, the showers that will develop in the polar maritime air will intensify, warns the Meteorological Institute. In the course of the evening and the night, they will adopt a winter character. In Lower and Middle Belgium, it will first be expected sleet and, in the evening and at night, also melting snow. Especially in the northeast of the country, snow that will temporarily hold to the ground in places will be possible in the second part of the night. In Upper Belgium, the showers will first be mostly slush. In the evening and at night, they will turn into flurries of snow giving rise locally to an accumulation of a few centimeters on the ground towards dawn.
