Weakened by US sanctions, Huawei saw its turnover fall by 29% in 2021

The year 2021 has not been easy for the Chinese company Huawei. Since the United States implemented economic sanctions against the company, accused of carrying out espionage for the benefit of China, the company’s performance has fallen sharply.

Huawei’s turnover thus decreased by 28.9% compared to 2020 to reach 634 billion yuan, or 87.84 billion euros. The company attributes the decrease to the ban imposed by the United States.

As a reminder, the ban put in place about two and a half years ago prevents American companies and those which rely on American technologies, from having commercial relations with the Chinese giant. The main reason given is that the company is considered by the US government to be a risk to national security.

Huawei has always denied all accusations, saying the company has never done anything to lose the trust of its users, but from the American perspective, it is better to act proactively than to wait for it to be. too late.

The smartphone industry particularly affected

The sector that has suffered the most is undoubtedly that of smartphones. The telecommunications equipment sector has remained fairly stable. As Huawei is not publicly traded, the company is not required to disclose more specific details, so trust information provided by the company.

Despite this bad year, Guo Ping, CEO of Huawei said the company has been working to stay competitive despite the restrictions. It has thus developed in other sectors, in particular consumer electronics and the automobile. HarmonyOS, the alternative operating system to Android, is now installed on around 200 million devices.

In his New Year’s letter to employees, the president of Huawei said, “The year 2022 will bring its share of challenges, but we will continue to work closely with our global partners to overcome the challenges. challenges we face, improve business performance and strengthen our foundations… Ultimately, we will not just survive, but we will do so in a sustainable manner. “
