It’s no secret that Bart De Wever met the Vlaams Belang last year during negotiations for the formation of a Flemish regional government. In the end, the discussions did not lead to an agreement between the nationalist party and the other Flemish political parties.
Gwendolyn Rutten, former President of the Flemish Liberals, was today a guest on the VRT program “De Afspraak” and revealed that the president of the N-VA was however ready to join a coalition with the Vlaams Belang.
In this coalition, could also have found the Open VLD and the CD&V “We will reward you generously, but we want the Vlaamse Belang on board the government”, would have proposed the president of the N-VA to the two parties.
The liberals and Christian democrats did not however want to respond favorably to this offer but the coalition including the Flemish nationalists would have been “put on the table and really tested politically”, according to the words of Gwendolyn Rutten.
According to her, this would explain why the formation of a federal government is still extremely complex today: “If it is already difficult with N-VA in French-speaking Belgium, it is completely unthinkable to speak with Vlaams Belang. If, as a large party, you say you are ready to govern with them, this inevitably fuels mistrust. ”
