“We were all disgusted”: dead midges served in a high school canteen

Bad surprise on the plate for Essonne’s high school students. How relative The Parisian, several students from the Gaspard-Monge high school in Savigny-sur-Orge reported finding dead insects on their plates. “When my friend smelled it, he said to himself: it’s crunchy! Then he took a closer look …”, says a high school student in the Ile-de-France newspaper. On Tuesday 13 September the fish and wheat dish served in the canteen was visibly embellished with small dead black insects. “It is between the gnat and the larva”, “It was crunchy to bite”, say the half board.

What a “disgust” the students, who could not finish their dishes. The videos of the dishes have gone viral on social networks. “Are we in Koh-Lanta or what?” A teenager was outraged on Snapchat. After this incident, canteen attendance took a hit, much to the chagrin of the parents. “My son warned me on Friday. He told me he hadn’t eaten in the canteen because of the bugs on his plate,” says a mother of a student in Paris. And to add: “We’ll pay for the canteen anyway! Young people don’t like it already, now they just don’t want to go.”

The Île-de-France region reports to the Ile-de-France newspaper that it has “implemented a food safety alert protocol, as a precaution, pending detailed evidence”. On the part of the establishment, we support the isolated incident due to sacks of contaminated grain. While waiting to shed some light on the reasons for the presence of these insects on the dishes, the high school students took the direction of the pedestrian artery of Savigny. From now on, at noon, they prefer the fast-food of the municipality, and this even if it must cost them a little more.
