We tested the Fouquet’s hotel in New York

Posted December 17, 2022 at 2pm

It is in the wealthy district of Tribeca, a privileged enclave away from the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps, that the Barrière group (Fouquet’s Paris, Le Majestic Cannes, Normandy in Deauville) has opened its first branch across the Atlantic. .

The concept. Combine the ultimate in French luxury with the best American service. A winning gamble for the Desseigne family, who have made this brick-built address the flagship of a new generation of five-star establishments. If the landmarks of the Barrière house are still found here and there, they are being revisited to attract Americans. Two meeting rooms, a sumptuous cinema room and a top-of-the-range spa in partnership with Biologique Recherche open their arms to a business clientele in search of luxury and calm.

The decor. In this former industrial building recently used as a parking lot, 97 rooms and suites have been decorated by the trendy designer Martin Brudnizki, with the references of the brand in his toolbox: Art Déco colors, velvet and pleated silk, Venetian lighting… Here is , the smallest of the rooms measures 34 m2against 20 m2 on average in NYC to a comparable standard. The famous Toile de Jouy presents unusual motifs in homage to the New York terroir: buildings typical of the surroundings, taxis to pay homage to Robert de Niro, godfather of the neighborhood. The halls have a mini (rather maxi) pink Barbie bar, around which a mixologist can go up to the room to prepare a bespoke cocktail and put on a show.

Taste. The brasserie menu is signed by the three-star chef Pierre Gagnaire, who brilliantly reinterprets the classics of French gastronomy: onion soup, beef tartare with “Coin de Rue” apples and Fouquet’s chocolate biscuit, an exquisite XXL rock. The Par-ci Par-là café, sheltered by a glass roof that folds up in the summer, offers a more modern menu, inspired by the slow food movement and almost vegetarian. His best-seller: his luscious tomato soup served with a truffle grilled cheese sandwich. Finally, at the end of the hall, the speakeasy-style Titsou bar is hidden. It is said that an ultra-selected rooftop will also open this summer.
