The kiss William Shatner plants on the lips of co-star Nichelle Nichols in ‘Star Trek’ is therefore one of the first between a white and a black actor. That the kiss could be seen at all is a minor miracle. The appearance of Nichelle Nichols as Lieutenant Uhura had already caused quite a stir at the time. “There were places in the South that wouldn’t air ‘Star Trek’ because it featured an African-American woman in an important position, who wasn’t a maid or a tap dancer,” Nichols himself noted delicately.
