“We are losing control of COVID-19,” warns the president of the Israel Communicable Diseases Society

The president of the Israel Communicable Diseases Society, Miri Weinberg, wrote a letter addressed to the director of the Ministry of Health, Chezy Levy, warning that the country is on the verge of losing control over the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report by the Kan state radio station.

Weinberg said that not only is the number of positive cases increasing, but also the age of those infected, indicating that patients could suffer more serious conditions.

“In the past two weeks, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of daily coronavirus infections. There has also been an increase in the ages of those diagnosed and hospitalized in recent days, “Weinberger said.

“We are about to lose control of the epidemic in Israel. We are near the point of no return where there will be massive infections and overloads of seriously ill patients. The window for effective action is closing: if we don’t start at the beginning of this week, we will lose the boat and we may even lose control, “said the specialist.

Weinberger suggested a series of recommendations, including improved testing to diagnose the virus and tracking contacts, better protection for those caring for COVID-19 sufferers, an inventory of effective drugs for treatment, and a plan multi-year plan to deal with epidemics.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the “Coronavirus Cabinet”, charged with leading the government’s response to the pandemic, will meet to reimpose some restrictions on meetings against the backdrop of the increased contagion, as well as the application of greater penalties for those who violate the regulations.

The Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that another person died from the virus, bringing the number of fatalities to 318.

After registering 76 new cases since Saturday night, the total number of those infected since the pandemic began amounts to 23,497.

However, the number of infected people is 6,160, including 45 people who are in serious condition, 24 of them piped in artificial ventilators.

A total of 50 patients are in moderate condition, and the rest exhibit mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.

A total of 17,019 people have been recovered.

Three people died on Saturday from COVID-19. Among them was a 19-year-old girl who died at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, and became the youngest coronavirus fatality in Israel.

In recent days, there have been between 400 and 500 new daily positive cases, a figure that has not been seen since early April.
