Wavin fights corona with face protectors

Immediately the company produces ten thousand face shields per day. After the first fifty thousand have been donated, the face shields are offered at cost to hospitals, retirement homes and home care institutions.

In addition to mouth masks

The face protector in itself does not offer a hundred percent protection and is intended to complement the mouth masks. It especially protects the eyes and nose from the miniscule moisture droplets in which the virus spreads. Wavin developed the screens in collaboration with the healthcare sector.

In three parts

At the factory in Hardenberg, Wavin converted one of the machines for plastic cuffs. Day and night, this machine runs one of the three parts required to complete a face shield. The sight glass is also made of plastic and is being prepared at Larcom’s social workshop in Hardenberg. The third part is an elastic.

The product was conceived and developed in Wavin’s Technology and Innovation Center in Dedemsvaart. Director Claudia Goemans is proud. “And not only me, everyone at Wavin is happy that we can support care with this. There is a great need for protection against the virus and this can help.”

Healthcare personnel are happy with it

Wavin hopes that the protector can contribute to solving the national shortage of protective equipment for healthcare personnel. It has already been tested in various places and the healthcare staff is very happy with it. The main advantage over other similar face protectors is that it does not fog up on the inside. As a result, nurses continue to have a good view.

Wavin donated the first fifty thousand copies to various hospitals in the region. The intention is to distribute the face protectors through the national coordination center of the government. Healthcare institutions that want to order themselves can register via the Wavin website.

‘Red hot’

“We have only just started, but already notice an enormous interest in the face protector. The phone is already ringing off the hook,” says Tristan van de Pavert of Wavin.

Wavin wants to continue producing the face protectors as long as necessary. In addition to the production line that has been released in Hardenberg, we are now examining whether the screens can also be made internationally.
