Water Restrictions Eased in Cévennes, but Crisis Continues in Gard Department

According to the Gard prefecture, groundwater levels and river flows remain at a very low level in the department. But in the Cévennes part of the department the restrictions have been eased.

The rains in mid-September were limited and mainly affected the Cévennes. They allowed a slight recharge in the upstream parts of the Hérault, Gardons and Cèze watersheds. At the same time, temperatures remain high and Météo France services do not forecast any significant rain in the coming days. A written consultation with members of the water resources committee (CRE) took place from September 25 to 28.

Additional field measurements were also carried out, particularly on the Vidourle, which confirmed the continued crisis situation on this river. At the end of this consultation, Jérôme Bonet, prefect of Gard, decided to reduce by one threshold the restrictions on Arre, Hérault, Gardons upstream and Cèze upstream (reinforced alert). The crisis situation on Vidourle, Gardons aval and Cèze aval is, for its part, maintained. Finally, the Dourbie sub-basin is placed on vigilance, to be consistent with the decisions of the prefects of the upstream Tarn basin.

The situation is therefore as follows:

Crisis areas

– Vidourle, Gardons aval and Cèze aval. Areas in heightened alert situation

– Arre, Hérault, Cèze upstream, Gardons upstream and Ardèche. Area in alert situation

– Alluvium from Vistrenque and Costières. Areas under vigilance

– Dourbie, Rhône and Gard Camargue

Reminder of measures linked to thresholds : .

In a situation of vigilance : everyone is asked to adopt eco-responsible behavior, using water responsibly. The challenge is to preserve the resource for the weeks to come and delay the taking of more restrictive measures.

In alert situation : filling private swimming pools, washing cars at home and operating fountains are prohibited. Agricultural irrigation, watering of sports fields, domestic watering (lawns, ornamental gardens) and vegetable gardens is prohibited between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (except for water-saving irrigation methods such as drip). -drop only for agriculture). The objective is to reduce the volumes collected for non-priority uses by a third.

In heightened alert situation : additional prohibitions concern watering times (between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and every other night) and the ban on watering lawns not accessible to the public. The objective is to halve the volumes collected for non-priority uses.

In a crisis situation : only priority uses of water are authorized, contributing to the supply of drinking water to populations, the survival of aquatic species, the watering of animals, civil security and public health. Requests for supervised exemptions are possible for the benefit of agricultural irrigation.
