Washington Post: US failed to prevent the spread of monkeypox

New York City (ANTARA) – The COVID-19 pandemic and the monkeypox outbreak (monkeypox) are very different, but the United States’ initial response revealed similar and worrying flaws, according to a report by The Washington Post (WP).

“The supply of vaccines is limited. Long queues at a number of clinics. The number of cases is increasing every day. Fear, anxiety and public suspicion are growing. The government announced that everything was under control, but it was not,” said WP on Saturday (7/8).

Unlike at the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there is an effective vaccine against monkeypox, but the most suitable is the two-dose Jynneos vaccine, which is in short supply, mostly due to bottleneck production, and conditions may remain the same for months, according to the report.

This situation would require at least 329,000 doses, or nearly all of the 336,710 doses the government had delivered as of July 29.

The number of populations at highest risk and vulnerable is likely much higher, which the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates at 1.7 million people, the WP report said.

“The virus also spreads quickly and it may be too late to stop it,” the report added.

WP revealed that the recent declaration of a state of emergency by the Joe Biden administration and the World Health Organization (WHO) underscores that the crisis is far from over.
