The Donald Trump Administration has linked with the Chinese Army to a number of companies of the Asian giant, including Huawei, which will further hinder China’s entry into sensitive U.S. technology sectors and opens the door to the imposition of new sanctions. This is revealed by a Pentagon document to which Reuters and Financial Times, whose authenticity has been confirmed by anonymous sources from the Administration, who assure that the report has been sent to Congress.

The document contains a listing of 20 Chinese companies that Washington says are owned or controlled by the People’s Liberation Army. In addition to the telecommunications giant Huawei, whom Washington accuses of carrying out cyber espionage for Beijing, the list includes the Hikvision group, which provides video surveillance technology to internment camps in the Xinjiang region, where the Chinese government is holding the Uyghur Muslim minority. Also listed are China Mobile and China Telecommunications, two companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as aeronautical manufacturer Aviation Industry.

In 1999, the United States Congress commissioned the Pentagon to develop this list, but it has not been done until now. The increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing, In both the commercial, technological and political arenas, pressure has been mounting on the Pentagon by lawmakers from both parties to publish the list.

The mere fact that the Pentagon establishes that they are controlled by the Chinese Army does not directly imply the imposition of sanctions, but the same law that ordered the preparation of the list authorizes the president to declare a national emergency that would allow him to sanction the companies on that list that operate in the United States. The most belligerent with China are confident that the mere inclusion of companies on the list will serve as a deterrent to American investors considering doing business with them.
