Was going to feed the animals: Was injured

The feed machine, which has powerful blades, had stopped working a few days before. Christer Karlsson therefore stood in the middle of the machine so that he could get the feed into a cart for his own machine, and then to the animals.

He had taken the power to the machine. What he had forgotten, however, was to shut off the power to a smaller motor – which only kicks in if there is less than 400 kilos of feed in the mixer.

He estimates that there was between 400 and 500 kilos of feed in the machine when it started.

– I screamed, and thought my last moment had come. I tried to get out, and managed to hold on to a pipe along the inside, says the Swede to Dagbladet.

The powerful knives in the machine began to spin, and the 57-year-old man was injured in both his arm and leg.

Expressen mentioned the case first.

– Darling, are you alive?

It was an early morning at the end of October last year that the incident happened. Christer and his partner Sara Öhman had started the working day on the farm between Oskarshamn and Vëstervik, and Karlsson had started the feeding work.

For this, they use a machine which they feed with grain, protein feed, straw and hay bales.

The usually good helper was thus to turn into a nightmare.

Fortunately, his roommate Sara was only meters away when the machine started. She cut the power, and looked up at the machine.

– Darling, are you alive?, she said according to Expressen.

She then called the ambulance. Around what Karlsson believes is 20 minutes later, they were in place.

Muscle torn off

By then, the damage was already extensive.

– There was an open wound of around 15 centimeters in the leg. Parts of the skeleton were crushed and the muscle on the front of the leg was torn off. As for my arm, I couldn’t move any fingers other than my thumb, recalls Karlsson.

In addition to his injuries, he had also lost a lot of blood. The paramedics tied the foot again at the groin to stop the bleeding.

Not long after, Karlsson fell asleep from the medication he was given.

At the hospital, he was operated on, and the wounds were cleaned of feed residues.

On his arm he has a scar of around 25 centimeters, and the scar on his leg is also significant. Nevertheless, the Swede believes that he was lucky – all things considered.

Lasting though

Now the Swede has titanium plates in both his arm and leg, and he does not imagine that he will ever be 100 percent healthy.

– I’m probably going to have some problems with movements anyway. I can’t bend my knee, which is necessary if you drive a car, tractor – or milk cows. The hand is getting better and better every day, but it hurts when I twist it, he says.

On the farm, where he and his partner live, they have both horses and cows – a total of over 200 animals. While Karlsson spends large parts of his days inside, including rehabilitating his injuries, it is his partner and daughter who take care of most of the farm work.

– It won’t be that much work. I hope for the best – but I probably won’t get well enough to work fully. In any case, I hope that eventually I can do a lot, says Karlsson.
