The US has in Afghanistan carried out an attack on the branch of Islamic State in the country, IS-K. According to the Pentagon, the IS leader who was the target was killed. The action is in retaliation for the attack on Kabul airport last Thursday. 13 American soldiers were killed. The number of Afghan dead is not clear; the numbers mentioned range from 79 to 169.
The drone attack on IS-K was carried out in the eastern province of Nangahar. Details about who was the target and how this person was involved in the attack in Kabul have not yet been released. No civilians were killed in the attack, US defense officials said, but no further information was released.
