The outgoing cabinet advises against the motion by VVD leader Dilan Yesilgöz to postpone the discussion of the dispersal law in the Senate. With this, outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte whistles back on his successor as VVD leader.
Yesilgöz tabled the motion during the debate on the results of the November 22 elections. The motion has also been signed by Geert Wilders (PVV), Pieter Omtzigt (NSC) and Caroline van der Plas (BBB). The parties declare that they have “reducing the influx (of migration, ed.) high on the agenda”.
The dispersal law was passed by the House of Representatives at the beginning of October and is intended to better distribute asylum reception across the Netherlands. Many municipalities currently do not contribute. Outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum) sees the law as a solution to the shortage of shelter places.
The bill is now before the Senate. Treatment is scheduled for January. With her motion, Yesilgöz wants to ensure that this is postponed. But the Senate is concerned with its own agenda and “the cabinet supports the bill,” Rutte emphasizes in a letter.
Much criticism of motion
There was a lot of criticism of Yesilgöz’s move on Wednesday. Rob Jetten (D66), who, like the VVD leader, is part of the cabinet, spoke of “constitutional vandalism”. He pointed out that the VVD proposal could split the cabinet. CDA leader Henri Bontenbal also warned about this.
The distribution law is Van der Burg’s idea. Just like Yesilgöz, he wears a double hat: part of the outgoing cabinet and a member of the VVD faction. He, of all people, must defend the bill, which was adopted by the previous House of Representatives despite opposition from the VVD, in the Senate.
