Vontovorona: Yet another student strike

Polytechnic students demand the resumption of classes after long weeks of suspension

A return to normal. This is all that the students of the Vontovorona Polytechnic Higher School ask for. They made it known yesterday during yet another demonstration held on site. Indeed, following the strike by the Union of Teachers, Researchers and Teachers of Higher Education (SECES) Antananarivo section, which is now entering its third month, educational and research activities are suspended. The students are demanding the resumption of teaching and the holding of exams and other defenses, which have remained on hold for more than two months. During their demonstration yesterday, they deplored this situation: “Some of the students, particularly those from the regions, have had to return to their parents since no classes have taken place for all this time, but now that information is circulating about an imminent resumption of classes, many of them have already returned, while nothing is happening, while their resources are dwindling”. They are therefore demanding an upward revision of scholarships, which “should be in line with galloping inflation because the current amounts are insignificant compared to the cost of living”.

Brandishing banners and other signs, these students from the polytechnic school are also demanding the restoration of electricity and water supply to their accommodation in Vontovorona, as well as the rehabilitation of the toilets, or else the implementation installation of new toilet blocks. In reality, it is student accommodation in general in Vontovorona that is in a state of deterioration.
