Volvo makes an agreement with Waymo for level 4 autonomous cars

Volvo (owned by the Chinese company Geely) has signed a strategic partnership with Waymo (Alphabet) for the autonomous cars of level 4, that is, a driving system capable of operating alone almost always, except in extreme conditions such as in bad weather. The companies will work together with the intention of integrate Waymo’s autonomous driving technology – the Waymo Driver – into a brand new electric vehicle platform intended for on-call transport services such as Uber or Lyft.

Despite the partnership with Waymo, Volvo will continue to supply vehicles to Uber for the development and testing of autonomous driving technology. Likewise Waymo will continue to partner with FCA, Jaguar Land Rover and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. It is not currently known when we will see Volvo vehicles with Waymo technology on the road.
