Volvo is working on a revolutionary technology. It can replace a transparent display

In today’s cars, the transparent, so-called head-up display is projected on a sliding glass or directly on the windscreen, always from the projector on the dashboard. However, Volvo plans to use only the glass in the windscreen to display information in the driver’s field of vision.

By investing in the Spectralis project, Volvo is aiming for the earliest possible access to this revolutionary technology, which it intends to continue using if it can be brought to perfection. It is a new type of multilayer thin combiner that uses a thin optical film on a transparent surface.

Thanks to this, the combiner can overlay selected images directly on the glass, for example in cars. It can therefore be used, for example, as an improved version of the transparent, so-called head-up display, which can be displayed from one side to the other. This would then open the door to a better use of virtual reality.

“Spectralis is an exciting company with technology that is a real and great promise for us. By supporting their development, we can shift the potential of their products in future Volvo vehicles, ”said Volvo Cars Product Director Henrik Green. The Swedes intend to use the system in the cabin or to display a blind spot.

Spectralis is an Israeli company that primarily deals with aerospace systems. Volvo got involved through the MobilityXLab program, which takes place every year in Gothenburg, Sweden and brings together promising startups. Volvo has been the main partner of this event since 2017.
