RUSSIA – Could this be the Kremlin’s best kept secret? As the war in Ukraine has passed the symbolic milestone of 100 days, speculation and rumors surrounding Vladimir Putin’s health continue unabated.
Fantasies which have also forced his indestructible head of diplomacy Sergei Lavrov to raise the subject. “I don’t believe that someone with all his head can see in this person signs of an illness or any affection”, he affirmed on May 29 during an interview on TF1.
However, at the dawn of his 70th birthday – on October 7 – the state of health of the head of the Kremlin questions and fascinates beyond the walls of the Moscow fortress.
An “advanced cancer” according to American intelligence
In January, we find that he is unable to stay in place for an Orthodox Christmas celebration. The month followed, everyone remembers the huge table to separate him from Emmanuel Macron. In April, it was his slumped position in his chair with his hand clinging to the table facing his Minister of the Armed Forces which fueled the rumor about the deterioration of his physical condition.

Putin, sinking in his chair, gripping the table. He’s okay, right? Healthy? https://t.co/PmEo3aZtGY
“Putin, sinking back in his chair, clutching the table. He’s fine, right? In good health?”, reacted on Twitter to this CNN journalist on April 21.
In the United States, the question is also treated with great seriousness, beyond simple speculation about his body language which lends him to the onset of Parkinson’s. In a classified report, the American intelligence services indicate instead that Vladimir Putin suffers from “advanced cancer” treated in April, according to echoes of three American intelligence officials that the magazine Newsweek just published.

Also referring to a foiled assassination attempt in March, this report puts forward the idea that Vladimir Putin would be physically weakened, even if his extreme isolation in recent months prevents any precise assessment of his state of health. “What we do know is that there is an iceberg there, even though it’s covered in fog,” imaged an anonymous source from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
Putin’s health a state secret
If Vladimir Putin’s health is so well guarded, it does not date from this war in Ukraine. Cultivating an image of a particularly virile and sporty man, the Russian leader does not however resist the pangs of time. According to the many elements compiled by the Russian site Proekt, a reputable investigative media but banned since July 2021 by the Russian state, the veil around Putin’s health has long been opaque.
Proekt tells in an investigation published on April 1 that the president is forced to permanently conceal the slightest physical glitch that would damage his image of badass which is so dear to him. Whether it’s a cold or a sports injury, everything has to be hidden. The site recalls an event, apparently banal, but which demonstrates the very particular attention given to its image.
At a memorial ceremony in Red Square in November 2012, images of Vladimir Putin could never be released for one simple reason. The president was limping. However, the images had been made public by the website of the Patriarch of Moscow. Several government sources had then advanced back pain that may require surgery. Information immediately denied by Dmitri Peskov, despite a series of events canceled at the end of 2012.

Added to this are several intriguing Putin “disappearances” over the years. A “cold” in the middle of the electoral campaign in February 2018, this series of trips and events canceled in the Kremlin at the end of 2012 or even a “self-isolation” from September 13 to 29, 2021 which adds mystery around this very sensitive subject in the corridors of the Kremlin.
To hide these repeated absences, the Kremlin’s communication is now well established, after 23 years of presidency. Thanks in particular to the use of pre-recorded videos, which have become commonplace in the Russian state apparatus.
More and more personal doctors
According to the investigative site, as he grew older, Vladimir Putin surrounded himself largely with doctors. Proekt estimates that about nine specialists accompanied the leader permanently in 2019. Among the three doctors most consulted by Putin, Evgeny Selivanov, surgeon-oncologist, present in particular alongside his president during a “disappearance” observed between the 8 and on August 16, 2017. It is said to have been consulted almost 35 times in the space of four years.
In addition to the armada of doctors, Putin’s interest in thyroid cancer raises questions in Russia. The president showed a certain curiosity for the subject, meeting in particular in 2020 Ivan Dedov, head of the National Center for Medical Research in Endocrinology, in order to discuss the extent of this disease as well as a new hormonal treatment under study.
Ivan Dedov is also the boss of Putin’s eldest daughter, Maria, a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Moscow State University, but also a shareholder in the medical company Nomeko. A Russian company, one of whose research projects is studying new methods of treating cancer.
Enough to feed a number of fantasies around the leader, who had also displayed particularly cautious – even paranoid – behavior since the arrival of Covid-19, with sometimes disproportionate health protocols within the Russian political apparatus.

And if the Americans seem certain that something is eating away at Vladimir Putin, nothing indicates the imminent death of the head of the Kremlin. However, “the threat of the mad man of nuclear war” seems less great for American intelligence with a “weakened” Vladimir Putin.
“A weakened Putin has less influence over his advisers and subordinates, say, if he orders the use of nuclear weapons,” a senior US Defense Intelligence Agency official said.
