Vítor Pereira: Journey from FC Porto to coaching opportunities in England and Spain

Vítor Pereira recalled, in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca, the end of his connection to FC Porto. In 2013, after winning the second championship, the coach did not reach an agreement to renew his contract with the Dragons and left the club.

«I left by my own decision. I didn’t want to renew because I had already spent eight years at FC Porto, five in the Academy and three in the main team. My intention, when I didn’t renew, was to go to England and coach Everton, but that didn’t end up happening and I went to Saudi Arabia, because I wanted to guarantee my family’s future, from an economic point of view”, he explained.

How the More football wrote, Vítor Pereira met in England with Everton’s management, joining the final list of candidates, but the British opted for Roberto Martínez (ex-Wigan), current Portugal coach.

In the conversation with Marca, the Portuguese coach was asked about the fact that he had not yet managed a team from the so-called Big-5. He was in Germany, of course, but TSV 1860 Munich was competing in the second tier.

“I’m probably a little to blame. I don’t have the patience to wait for the right opportunity to arrive. For me, football is like breathing. When I start to run out of air, I have to return to the pitch. Now I’m a little calmer, but I know I’ll be back soon», he highlighted.

Vítor Pereira, fired from Flamengo in April 2023, believes he will end up coaching a Spanish League team, after having been considered by clubs such as Almería or Seville. «Yes, I believe that one day it will happen. I recently had some possibilities, but they didn’t materialize,” he concluded.
