Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes, Obesity, and Cancer: Expert Warns

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and even cancer. This was said by a cosmetologist, the scientific director of the Grand Clinic network of clinics Olga Shuppo.

“Studies show that vitamin D deficiency can also cause cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases and even cancer. The protective function of the immune system is weakened, which increases the risk of diseases and their complications,” said Shuppo in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Vitamin D deficiency is seen in half of the country’s population, including residents of the southern regions, according to studies. Many people mistakenly stop taking it with the onset of warm weather, believing that they will spend more time in the sun in the spring and summer. But when skin becomes thin, vitamin D production slows, Schuppo says.

You also cannot get enough vitamin D from food – it is present in a very small list of foods. In chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the level of vitamin D is even lower. But Shuppo reminds that only a doctor can determine the correct dose of vitamin D.

Suna Isakova, an oncologist at the medical company SberZdorovye, previously mentioned the beneficial and negative aspects of being in the sun. She pointed to the production of vitamin D as a benefit, which promotes the absorption of calcium and supports the functioning of the immune system. But exposure to ultraviolet rays is more likely to cause skin aging and cancer risk, experts said RT.
