Virus: Lebanon vaccinates more than 10,000 people in one day

Lebanon announced that it had vaccinated more than 10,000 people against the coronavirus on Saturday alone as part of a “marathon” vaccination campaign organized by the Ministry of Health in the country in crisis.

In total, 10,452 people over the age of 30 had received a dose of AstraZeneca vaccine at 6.30 p.m. (3.30 p.m. GMT), according to the ministry, by going without an appointment to several vaccination centers scattered around the country and open early in the morning. .

The capital Beirut and parts of the country were not affected by this “marathon” operation, as the authorities described it, but the outgoing Minister of Health, Hamad Hassan, assured that a second day of this type was planned and would cover more regions this time.

“Some regions did not want to participate but after today’s encouraging experience, everyone will soon take part,” he said without specifying a date.

The operation was “a great success,” said Firas Abiad, director of the Rafic Hariri university hospital in Beirut, the main establishment mobilized in the fight against the coronavirus.

Some 170,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are due in the country on Sunday, he added.

Lebanon, mired in its worst economic crisis since the civil war (1975-1990), has officially recorded more than 540,000 cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, including 7,718 deaths.

The country of more than six million people has administered at least one dose of the vaccine to more than 700,000 people.
