Virtual classroom for COVID-19 caregivers

In this new normal it is important to take care of ourselves and help take care of those who need it. For this reason, the Colombian Association of Faculties of Medicine (Ascofame) devised multiple free virtual contents for all citizens interested in strengthening their skills, clarifying doubts and thus being able to serve another person or patient COVID-19 appropriately.

“The objective of the project is to provide basic educational tools that allow the socialization of behaviors and recommendations for the defense of one’s own and collective health from the daily confinement, in homes, emphasizing risk reduction and equity,” explained the doctor about the initiative. Gustavo Quintero, president of Ascofame and dean of Medicine at the Universidad del Rosario.

Sinay Arévalo, nuclear doctor and bioethicist, stated that this “is perhaps one of the most important examples that exist in America and the world dedicated to citizens, where medicine itself reacts positively, turning its gaze not only to its students, but for society; education is health ”.

How do you cope with isolation without locking yourself in when you’re over 60? That and the risks of contagion, the management of symptoms at home, are some of the topics found in the caregivers portal that has a news section, social networks and a library with multimedia resources.

“It is very important because we have an increasingly elderly population, an adult population and we want to have high standards of care for our patients,” said Arevalo.

Education strategies are now and in the future essential in the proper management of the pandemic and, especially, in the protection of the most vulnerable.

“After the age of 65, normally, 70 percent of all of us have more than one condition that affects them. There is less and less expert human talent and that help can be given by all of us, because the objectives of medicine are directed towards there, “added Arevalo.

This initiative seeks to contribute to less pressure on the health system and economic burden because it improves clinical results, reduces interventions, the formulation of drugs and diagnostic tests.

“That we appropriate our own health, our good, we be responsible for ourselves. That helps to build a true social bond, produces comfort, satisfaction that we are able to do something for others and ourselves,” asked Arevalo.
