The English Football Association FA has fined Virgil van Dijk 100,000 pounds (116,000 euros) following his outburst of anger towards referee John Brooks in the match against Newcastle United. The 32-year-old defender will also receive an additional one-match suspension, on top of the one-match suspension he had already received.

At the end of August, Van Dijk received the red card within half an hour in the match against Newcastle (1-2 win) after a foul on the broken through Alexander Isak. The defender was furious with Brooks and pointed his index finger at the referee from close range in an intimidating manner. He then argued with the fourth official, Craig Pawson.

The direct red card came with an automatic suspension of one match, which meant Van Dijk did not participate in the match won against Aston Villa (3-0) last Sunday. Last week it was announced that the Football Association was considering additional sanctions.

“The defender admitted behaving in an inappropriate manner and using offensive words towards a match official after being sent off,” the FA said in a statement. “The sanctions were imposed by an independent commission.”

The additional sanctions follow a recent tightening of the policy regarding criticism of the competition management. Since this season, Premier League players can immediately expect a yellow card if they complain to the referee.

Referees boss Howard Webb says he is “determined” to ensure that referees “do not turn a blind eye” to bad behavior from coaches and players this season. The fine and additional suspension are the result.

The FA often handed out heavy fines: for example, Chelsea star John Terry was fined £220,000 in 2012 for racist comments he allegedly made towards an opponent.

Ashley Cole, his then Chelsea team-mate, was subsequently fined £90,000 after expressing his frustration at the FA’s decision by insulting the Football Association on social media. Terry was acquitted of racism a year later.
