VAL GARDENA – Austrian skier Vincent Kriechmayr won the opening super-G of this World Cup season. In the Italian resort of Val Gardena, he won on Friday with a narrow margin of two hundredths of a second ahead of compatriot Daniel Hemetsberger.

Swiss Marco Odermatt finished third in an even race, three hundredths of a second behind the winner, the defender of the big and small globe became independent at the head of the overall standings of the prestigious series.

The first supergiant slalom of the season was held in the Dolomites, as the race in Beaver Creek, USA, was canceled at the beginning of December due to unfavorable weather conditions. Friday’s super-G did not have many technically demanding sections, and it was the details that decided it.

The section with “camel humps” on the Ciaslat meadow was the best for Kriechmayr, and although he lost slightly at the end, he kept two hundredths ahead of Hemetsberger at the finish line. He took care of the first Austrian super-G championship since March 17, 2022, when he triumphed in Courchevel, France. He made up his mind after finishing 17th in Thursday’s race.

“It was significantly better than yesterday. I took much more risks. The track was built quite simply, then you have to pay attention to every detail.” 32-year-old Kriechmayr, who celebrated his 17th career victory, told APA.

Hemetsberger narrowly missed his first triumph in the prestigious series. “Losing by two hundredths is bitter. Vincent didn’t give me anything. It was a relatively fast super-G, with few corners,” commented on the race for ORF.

Bad luck for the champion from Switzerland

Odermatt was unlucky again, he finished third in Thursday’s run, when he was five hundredths behind the winner Bryce Bennett from the USA, a day later he finished again on the Saslong slope in bronze position in another hundredth “detective”.

However, the Swiss can be happy that he broke away from the Austrian Marc Schwarz, who took fifth place (+0.13), at the head of the overall classification. Bennett took the 14th place (+0.41), one of the favorites Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde came out with no points, a loss of 1.09 s was enough for him to take only 37th place.

The race had to be interrupted for a long time after the fall of another Austrian, Andreas Ploier, who was carried off the track on a stretcher with an injured knee. Slovakia was not represented in the competition. On Saturday, the second race is scheduled in Val Gardena (11:45 a.m.).
