Ville Valo Talks Debut Solo Album ‘Neon Noir’ and Life After ‘HIM’ in Exclusive Interview

In my opinion, the name of the Finnish cult group “HIM” does not require any comments. Even those who have never heard their best-known hit “Join Me in Death” (unlikely) will definitely recognize the band’s symbol. No, no, I’m not talking about the “heartagram”, which for almost 30 years adorns not only the band’s records, fan t-shirts and even bodies (yes, it’s a very popular tattoo), but its leader – the charming Willi Valo.

The interview takes place on January 23 this year on the “Zoom” platform. Before that, we have a small conversation with the interview organizer Lena about technical issues, but after a moment Ville himself joins.

He is dressed in a black jacket and beret, but I immediately understand that his colleague’s request to know his favorite eyeliner is rejected, because this time he has no makeup. Ville Valo was considered late 90s/2000s. the sex symbol of the early years. His “bad boy” stage persona, smoking on stage, tattoos and low voice broke the hearts of many ladies. However, what we remember from magazines, posters on the wall, MTV broadcasts and, for those who are lucky, also on stage – is one. Well, in front of me is a very nice, polite, restrained and, of course, charming man, who apologizes for interrupting our conversation with Lena. Despite being interviewed all day, he is smiling and talking about his debut solo album “Neon Noir” with joy and passion, as well as looking back on the anxious time of the pandemic and remembering the day he broke up with “HIM”, the band, with whom he has spent most of his life. We talk and “cut” a little time for the next interview, but 30 minutes flew by in a flash.
