Viewers have not noticed this detail for years in “Operation Y”: Gaidai has thought of everything

The director disguised the hidden meaning in one of the scenes.

Leonid Gaidai was known for thoroughly thinking through all the plot details in his paintings. Therefore, even those details that the audience did not notice for years, in fact, were of great importance for the story. So it happened with the short story “Obsession” in the comedy “Operation” Y “”.

In one of the scenes, Shurik runs into the room to a student named Oak lying on the bed. He notices that he has headphones on and tries to find out what kind of music a classmate is listening to. He brushes it off and tries with all his might to kick Shurik out of the room, saying he’s listening to Van Cliburn.

Viewers, unlike the hapless hero, quickly realize that Oak is just testing a contraption to pass an exam and not spend his time listening to songs by famous artists. But, as it turned out, Van Cliburn’s name also appeared in the photo for a reason. In the USSR, many people really knew this musician – he was an outstanding pianist. Apparently, in this way Gaidai wanted to create a certain image of Oak, a somewhat naive character and at the same time an advanced type.
