– We want to help promote animal welfare by eradicating rabies, phasing out the dog and cat meat trade, and making this city a more attractive tourist destination, says the city’s deputy mayor Nguyen The Hung.
The city has now signed an agreement with the animal welfare organization Four Paws International, which hopes that more Vietnamese cities will follow Hoi An’s example.
Around five million dogs end up as human food each year in Vietnam, which is in second place behind China when it comes to eating dogs.
