Vietnamese man in prison for five years after violating corona measures

A judge in the Vietnamese province of Ca Mau yesterday sentenced the 28-year-old man to years in prison, Vietnamese media reported. The man traveled from Ho Chi Minh City to the province, where he spread the disease.

Eight people became ill and one died after a month of treatment from the effects of the corona virus.


Until recently, Vietnam was very successful in tackling the corona crisis. With source and contact investigations, strict border controls and mandatory quarantine, there were hardly any outbreaks. In 2020, according to official figures, only 35 inhabitants of the country died from the effects of the virus.

Since this spring, the country has been struggling with considerably more infections. In total, more than 536,000 infections have been reported and more than 13,385 people have died from the effects of the virus. In Ca Mau province, only 191 infections were really reported and two people died from the effects of the virus.

Past penalties

Previously, a Vietnamese was sentenced to 18 months in prison and another to two years behind bars for violating the corona measures.
