Vietnam banned the movie “Barbie” – News from Burgas

Vietnam has banned the distribution of the highly anticipated Warner Bros. movie “Barbie” in the country over a scene showing a map showing it as Chinese territory in the South China Sea that Beijing unilaterally claims as its own, Reuters reported, citing local media.

The zone is used on Chinese maps to illustrate the country’s claims to large areas of the South China Sea, including territory that Vietnam considers part of its continental shelf and has granted oil concessions there.

“Barbie” is another film banned in Vietnam for portraying as Chinese the disputed area, whose ownership was determined by an international judicial arbitration decision by the Hague Court in 2016. China refused to accept the court ruling.

In 2019, the Vietnamese government suspended the distribution of DreamWorks’ animation The Lost Yeti, and last year banned screenings of the action film Unchartered: Out of the Game for the same reason. Netflix has suspended access to Australian spy series ‘Pine Gap’ in 2021.
