Vietnam acquires five million doses of the Cuban vaccine Abdala

Dr. José Angel Portal Miranda, Minister of Public Health of Cuba, held on Monday a bilateral meeting with Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Vice Minister of Health of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, with the purpose of strengthening and expanding collaboration in the Health sector.

During the meeting, he recognized the hard work carried out by the government and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic and He thanked the donations sent by that country to Cuba, which have been of great value to the National Health System and the population.

The Cuban minister explained the strategy to confront COVID-19 on the island and highlighted the joint efforts between experts and scientists from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) and the Group of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba (BioCubaFarma).

He said that both the use of novel products in the action protocols and the development of Cuban vaccines have made it possible to advance in the control of the disease, and it is expected that by the end of 2021 the Cuban population over two years of age will be immunized.

About the Memorandum of Understanding between MINSAP and the Ministry of Health of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for collaboration in the Health sector –signed this September 19– He noted that the agreement will open a new path in the development of medical services and scientific advances, which will allow the development of cooperative relations in the field of health and training for the benefit of both peoples.

For his part, Dr. Tran Van Thuan thanked the host and the feelings of friendship and brotherhood shown by the government, MINSAP and the Cuban people. Likewise, he recalled the historical ties and friendship between both countries and classified the new agreement as more comprehensive by expanding the areas of cooperation.

The Vietnamese vice minister highlighted the work of Cuban doctors and the work they have done together with professionals from his country in the fight against COVID-19, and also highlighted the immunization process carried out by the island.

At the meeting, the representatives of each nation ratified their willingness and interest to increase collaboration in the areas of science and technology, training of human resources, prevention and control of infectious diseases, and medical assistance in primary care and hospitals.

In addition to other fields such as medical biotechnology, cooperation in the pharmaceutical sphere, as well as in the development of comprehensive health programs in the regions that demand it and the promotion of foreign investment projects in the health sector.

On the Cuban side, Mayda Mauri Pérez, first vice president of BioCubaFarma; the Vice Ministers of Health, Regla Angulo Pardo and Luis Fernando Navarro Martínez; and Néstor Marimón Torres, director of International Relations of MINSAP, among others.

While on the Vietnamese side it had the presence of Dang Viet Hung, general director of the Department of International Cooperation; Luong Ngoc Khue, CEO of the Medical Services Administration; Phan Le Thu, Deputy Director of the Finance and Planning Department; Ta Thuan Van, general director of Medical Universities; and Nguyen Dang Hien, director of the Center for Vaccine Research and Production.

This Monday’s exchange is part of the official visit to the Greater Antilles that, since September 18, has been carried out by Nguyen Xuan Phuc, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of that country, and the accompanying delegation.
