This Monday, April 11, 2022toward 17h30 a blue color helicopter flew over the north of Rennes. He was notably seen in the town of Saint-Sulpice-la-Foret, located 15km from Rennes. The aircraft flew for about twenty minutes, sometimes even at low altitude.
“He seemed to be looking for something”
Some residents were surprised to see the aircraft fly over their town. “He descended to a very low altitude above my neighbor’s house. We heard him about twenty minutes before he left. He looked like he was looking for something.” asks Timothy.
Contacted by News Rennes, the gendarmerie company first told us that this blue helicopter was not one of them. It is actually aboutan ERDF helicopter performing control of the electricity distribution network.
Why fly so low?
The helicopter flies at “a distance of 10 to 15 meters above the ground and 3 to 5 meters above the electrical wires”, explains KIDNEY to Malouin Country.
This monitoring campaign of overhead power lines allows us to anticipate any anomalies on the network (presence of foreign bodies or plants for example), some of which could be the cause of power cuts.
From Tuesday, April 12, 2022the inhabitants of other municipalities located around Rennes should also see this helicopter pass above their heads. 2 540 km electrical networks are controlled in Ille-et-Vilaine.
