MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

A video released by Elon Musk shows how his space company, Space X, recovers a payload fairing from a Falcon 9 rocket after falling from the sky after launch.

Payload fairings are the covers that protect the satellites during launch. SpaceX fairings come in two pieces, which return to Earth under parachutes in a guided way, thanks to small thrusters.

This technology helps to recover and reuse the fairings, which cost around six million each, according to Musk himself, founder and CEO of Space X, who posted the images on his Twitter account.

SpaceX’s GO ship Ms. Tree, equipped with an extensive net, picked up half of a falling payload fairing on August 18, shortly after a two-stage Falcon 9 rocket launched 58 Internet satellites into orbit. Starlink and three Earth-observing spacecraft.

Capturing rocket parts before they fall into the sea avoids the damage of the corrosion that salt water produces in them.

The August 18 launch included reuse actions on multiple fronts. It was the sixth launch of this particular first stage of Falcon 9, for example, a milestone SpaceX had never achieved before. And more takeoffs are likely for the thruster, which made its landing on a ship at sea on Tuesday, Space.com reports.
