VIDEO: the beating heart of glass frogs

Degradation and destruction of their habitat under pressure from agriculture and deforestation are the causes of the gradual disappearance of Centrolenidae. This family of amphibians was created in 1951. Lime green in color, some specimens have a completely translucent abdomen which justifies their name of “glass frogs”. But the reasons for this transparency are not yet elucidated by scientists. Endemic to countries in Central and South America, they are classified as critically endangered or vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. However, they play an important role in the balance of local ecosystems. Photo : Valentin Pacaut / The Explorers
