In the last hours, two cases of violence in the New York Subway they expose the mayor Bill de Blasio. A woman was thrown onto the train tracks as a formation approached and a man was brutally beaten: both are alive.
Underground violence: the symptom of a bigger problem
The images are shocking. A man on the platform, apparently doing nothing, suddenly runs and violently pushes a woman onto the train tracks. Seconds later the formation in question arrives and people are horrified imagining the worst ending.
Thank God, he has very minor injuries, said Kathleen OReilly, head of traffic, in relation to the victim, so far not identified. The 24-year-old aggressor was easily apprehended and, according to the reports, presented mental problems.
Hours before, the person who had an equally unpleasant experience was Alex Weisman. While waiting for the train at one of the Metro stations, the 33-year-old actor was accosted by a homeless man, who beat him savagely, causing a retinal tear and a fractured eye socket.
Both cases are just some of those that take place on the streets of New York. The root problem is presented as complex, since it starts from the exclusion of people who end up on the streets and lead to cases of crime and fights on their part.
Bill de Blasio: what about the mayor of New York?
The management of Bill de Blasio As mayor of New York, he is not well received by the inhabitants of this city. So much so that, facing the elections this year, the Democrat did not stand as a candidate because he saw the small amount of votes he would have in his favor.
When de Blasio was consulted about the situation of the homeless at the time, he said that it is very rare to see them on the streets of New York.
Until now the mayor has treated them practically as an exception, when the reality is that more and more people are homeless and in a state of total vulnerability.
It is a constant that has grown since Bill de Blasio came to power in 2014 and that was accentuated during this year’s pandemic.
In fact, as a sanitary measure it was established that New York subway it would be closed every night for 4 hours for disinfection work. The security personnel take advantage of this moment to evict the homeless who settle in the different stations, but they return shortly after.
Neighbors from the five boroughs of the city have voiced their complaints, but de Blasio still does not echo what is happening. Moreover, he even affirms that under his administration measures have been carried out to precisely reduce the presence of homeless people on the streets.
